CERT to the Rescue
Posted by Anne
On Saturday, February 21, 2004 the first two classes of CERT participated in two different Mock Disaster Drills. The group gathered at a city warehouse to put into practice all the techniques and skills learned during the seven-week training course.

The Southlake fire fighters prepared the building with victims, smoke, debris and obstacles for the CERT teams to overcome. The two classes merged into one team to come to the aid. The first drill had Boyd Dollar as our incident commander. Boyd split the group of 28 into teams of Search and Rescue, Medical, Utilities and Fire Suppression. The S&R teams went in and brought out the injured to the triage area. The firefighters kept the exercise interesting by throwing in new situations as the drill progressed. Once all victims had been rescued a review took place so we could do it all over again but even better the second time around. Boyd was great and being the first one to be the IC took guts!

We broke for lunch that was prepared by the fire fighters. Everyone seemed to enjoy the hot dog and hamburger fare. Once we had eaten and rested a bit we started up the second drill. Rita Galloway was the incident commander for this go around and she did a great job getting the rescue done.

At the end of the second drill, Lt Shawn Fannan handed out certificates to each of the participants.

The CERT team would like to thank Director Black, Chief Wilson, Captain Starr, Lieutenant Fannan, Kenny Vernon, Shan Allsbrook, Cliff Halvorson, Mike Bedrich, Ross Korkmas, Barry Hinkle and all the firefighters for giving of their time to get us trained and for believing in the concept.
